Liquor News from Keith Haze
Keith is bringing you ALL the news, views and booze!
Hey there booze fans, wow last week was a lot of fun. Crazy busy here at Southern Spirits, and with my birthday festivities. What an awesome turnout for Lindy and the St. George tasting!! (will be back in stock today) Sold out in two hours! She loves us very much and will be returning with the gin this summer. I would once again like to thank you all so much for making us all look good. Everyone that comes here to pour says we have the best customers, and I know that is true because I have worked at two other liquor stores and shopped at over twenty. I would not trade you guys for anyone. Well most of you anyway 🙂
TASTINGS:
FRIDAY SOUTHERN COMFORT 3:30-6:30
I have run out of things to say about Soco. How about this? If you want something sweet and inexpensive, there is a drink for you. It was created by Martin Heron in New Orleans, where it was originally called “Cuffs and Buttons” Martin later moved to Tennessee and patented his creation where it became Southern Comfort. He originally infused the whiskey with real fruit and used honey as the sweetener.
SATURDAY DIXIE 3:30-6:30
Yes Mian and Dixie are back for another tasting, but do not worry because we are using this awesome vodka to launch some brand new tonics! A spicy pear, and a hibiscus. These are similar to Jack Rudy in that they are tonic syrups and not tonic water. Another fun twist and easy to make.
UPCOMING TASTINGS
TUESDAY MAY 12TH 3:30-6:30 CHARLES MEDLEY, WORLD FAMOUS DISTILLER WILL BE HERE POURING AND SIGNING BOTTLES.
MAY 30TH SATURDAY BALVENIE!!!! 3:30-6:30 MARK YOUR CALENDARS BECAUSE THIS WILL BE AN AWESOME EVENT!
NEW ARRIVALS!!
MONTELOBOS MEZCAL: I consider this to be a good starter Mezcal because it is quite smooth and the smokiness is not overpowering. If you have been wanting to give Mezcal a try this would be a good starting place. I also happen to love making mezcalrita’s where the smokiness gets counterbalanced with the sweet and sour.
RANSOM VERMOUTH: Top shelf sweet and dry vermouth from Oregon. That place continues to make high quality spirits but so little of it comes east. Come on Oregon, share with the rest of us!
TORRES 10: This is the Spanish Brandy I have been trying to get in here for years! It is ten years old and wipes the floor with Hennessy, Remy, and Courvoisier. It is smooth and dry and will make an awesome brandy cocktail.
KEITH’S CABINET: What Keith is drinking now. Some of you have asked me, how it is that I drink all of this each week but still seem relatively intelligent, the answer is that I rarely have more than 2 oz. of any of these.
CHATEAU MONTIFAUD XO COGNAC: This was my birthday bottle to myself and it is lovely. Aged for thirty years it is light, dry, and lonnnnng. A truly pleasant way to end an evening. I will be stretching this one out for a while.
CANA BRAVA RUM: Still the best white rum out there! Just 2 oz. (three times)
MEDLEY BROTHERS: I just cannot stop drinking this stuff! It makes such tasty cocktails. I frequently have more than 2 oz. of this.
TORRES 10: I was so happy to have this back in my liquor cabinet!!! And I only had two oz. (twice)
FORDS GIN: This was designed to make Martini’s and Gin and Tonics, and I find that it does both quite well. Was made by the Plymouth distiller. I only had one of each. As far as I remember.
WILLET and BOURYE UPDATE!
NOAH’S MILL: Already down to less than a case. Probably will not live past today.
ROWAN’S CREEK: More than half gone, might live through the weekend.
JOHNNY DRUM: less than a case, basically gone.
WILLET RYE: Good amount of this left.
WILLET BOURBON: We got this in the biggest quantity so this should be good for a while.
BOURYE: Only 1 case left, negotiating for more. My bottle is on my counter waiting to be cracked! An awesome birthday gift from my best friends.
RECIPE OF THE WEEK
PEAR MARTINI
2 OZ OF ABSOLUT PEAR VODKA (SMIRNOFF)
5 OZ OF SIPP SPARKLING PEAR
This thing is just so refreshing and tasty. My roommate is totally addicted and was quite sad that I failed to bring home another bottle of Sipp last night.
For added awesomeness put a splash of the St. George Spiced Pear into it.
