Rosé wine is juiced from red grapes and allowed to soak with the skins only for a short period to create the light pink color. The longer the wine soaks with the skins, the darker the color becomes. Most rosé wines are made from blends of different kinds of grapes; the most popular grape varieties used are Grenache, Sangiovese, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Cinsault, and Pinot Noir. The primary flavors of rosé wine are red fruit, flowers, citrus and melon.
The wine region known for making the best rosés is Provence, which creates rosé more than any other style of wine. In most cases, old world rosé is drier, or less sweet, than new world rosé. Rosé wines are also very versatile when it comes to food because they fall between the extremes of red and white wine. Rosé wines are best served chilled and also make excellent additions to cocktails!
