What’s a Growler?
For many, the world “growler” has several likely connotations, but for beer aficionados, it means the ticket to enjoying their favorite brew from the tap to their own glass bottle. The growler itself is simply the name of the half-gallon glass vessel that you fill in our store from one of eight taps and take home to enjoy.
But where did this idea come from? At the turn of the 20th century, fresh beer wasn’t available in cans and bottles as we enjoy it today. Instead, beer lovers carried their brew home in galvanized steel pails and as the carbon dioxide would seep through the lid, it would emit a low, rumbling sound which lead to the name “growler”. Over the decades, as beer (and glass) became more readily available, brewers took to branding their own “to go” bottles with silk-screens of their logo and thus how the modern growler was created.
The great part about the Southern Spirit growler is that once you purchase it, it’s yours to keep refilling forever. You just pay for the fills. Our growler bottles have our logo and are made of amber glass which protects your beer from light and UV rays which can affect the way the beer tastes.
There are plenty of reasons to love growlers and here are just a few!
1. We get new kegs in ALL THE TIME so you will never be bored at our growler station!
2. You will get about 4 or 5 good pints out of your growler which is perfect for sharing or just enjoying!
3. Fresh beer is always going to taste best if you drink it right away, but with the cap and proper storage, you can keep it for a week or two if you don’t open it once it’s capped. (We suggest drinking it sooner than later, but it’s all up to you!)
4. Once you open it, be sure to drink your beer within 2-3 days.
5. Be sure to keep it clean! Use very hot water and just a tiny bit of soap, if any.
Right now, we have some excellent brews for you to try! Come in and taste one of these!
Rodenbach Flanders Red
Coronado Frogs Breath IPA
