Southern Spirits Has the Best Products at the Best Prices!
Hey there booze fans, I hope you guys are all doing very well. I am super excited about the Armagnac tasting on Saturday. I am thrilled to be meeting Christine Cooney, and am I stoked to share her amazing products with you all. She is flying all the way from France to enlighten us all, and I have promised her a big crowd. I know you guys are going to blow her away the way you always do! Every time we have a special guest they always comment on how awesome you guys are and what a wonderful experience this is for them. People do not realize what a “destination” this is until they come here. There are people that walk in here and do not get it. I feel sorry for those people. I really do, when you are so close to something awesome and fun, but cannot see it, I find that to be sad. I want to help those people, but most of the time they will not let me. However, I will not stop trying. Now don’t get me wrong, I understand that every last one of us has probably been burned by some pushy salesperson in our life, and we are sometimes quite overbearing ourselves. Imagine you are a waiter at a restaurant and you know the menu backwards and forwards. Your customer wants to order the Spaghetti and Meatballs but the cook hates that dish and does a bad job at it. The owner won’t let her take it off the menu so she has to make it, but she does with no love or passion. Now if you order the lamb, you are going to get her absolute best, this is the dish she wakes up in the morning hoping to make for people. Waiters are not “supposed” to say, “the spaghetti sucks here try to the Lamb.” Here at Southern Spirits we want you to try the lamb 🙂
TASTINGS: FRIDAY 3:30-6:30 SERPENTS BITE
You know how Winter Jack only comes out once a year for about eight and a half seconds? Finally, someone came up with a substitute that is year round.
GALERIE – SAUVIGNON BLANC: Napa Sauvingnon blancs offer up a much bigger and forceful style that jumps right out of the glass.
LA CREMA PINOT NOIR WILLIAMETE: Welcome to 2016 where a California winery buys Oregon grapes and makes wine. This could very well be the future of the wine industry.
KAIKEN ULTRA MALBEC: These guys were putting out Malbec’s before the grape blew up and it shows. While the market has been flooded with a lot of dreck, this is a worthwhile Malbec.
LYETH MERITAGE: This Bordeaux blend from Sonoma is another reminder that most of the best wines on earth are blends. It is always amazing to how destructive assumptions can be. A blend gives a winemaker a chance to really demonstrate their skills. A single varietal wine is often lifted or buried by the weather.
BEER: 4:30-6:30
SCHOFFERHOFER GRAPEFRUIT: I love this beer so much! It is so refreshing and fun. But what I really love to do with this beer is add Gin or Tequila!
RADERBERGER PILSNER: I like German Pilsners because they are super clean, crisp, and with a little bit of hops on the finish.
DE LORD ARMAGNAC WITH CHRISTINE COONEY 3:30-6:30 SATURDAY
Here it comes! The Long awaited, long planned, and much demanded tasting of these amazing French brandies. Expert Christine Cooney will be here to help you understand why Armagnac is superior to Cognac and expose other lies you have been told and sold!
KEITH’S CABINET: What Keith is drinking now.
SMOOTH AMBLER SINGLE BARREL: I love this whiskey! It is a big, oaky, powerful, and forcefull whiskey. Awesome!
Queen Charlotte: Muddy Rivers aged rum is quite well made. Can be had straight or works well in cocktails.
DIPLOMATICO: This rum is just so wonderful. No matter how many times I try it, I always find something new that I like about it.
Edinburgh Gin: The Scottish gin that you do not know yet! I found this to be quite well made and it produced a great Gin and Tonic!
NEW ARRIVALS:
SMOOTH AMBLER SINGLE BARREL!!: We got in another shipment and this one should last longer than one and half days!
OLD PULTENEY NAVIGATOR: A new release from the fine folks at Old Pulteney. We all tasted this and it was an easy addition to the section. A big full bodied, easy drinking Scotch. This definitely stayed with me after tasting it.
This is an experimental cask series from Tomatin. Each scotch is aged in a different type of sherry cask. This kind of exploration is what makes whisky so much fun!
Fino, Manzanilla, Olorosso, and Pedro Ximenez. I will say this again, it is a wonderful time to be alive!
WASMUND SINGLE MALT: This is a whiskey from Virginia that I have been after for a while. It is young but tasty. They use a malted barley that no other distillery uses. This place is the real deal, nothing from Indiana here.
COPPER FOX RYE: I have not had this Rye, but the reviews are quite good, and I have confidence in this distiller. A passionate and talented Distiller who puts it all into the bottle.
BALBLAIR 1999: Another customer request and another Scotch added to our outstanding collection! 15 year old Vintage whisky. The difference between a Scotch labeled 15 and one that is vintage is quite large. Any age statement on a Scotch refers to the age of the youngest whisky. So really a Macallan 12 is a blend 12-13-14-etc. One of the many reasons why I find it amusing when people start coughing and wheezing when I recommend a blended whiskey to them. Vintage on the other hand comes from one batch that the Distiller thought was so good they did not want to blend it.
COLD RIVER BLUEBERRY !: It is back! The best blueberry vodka in the universe has returned after a lonnnnnnnnng absence!
RECIPE OF THE WEEK: GIN AND TONIC
The Gin and Tonic remains the ultimate drink for warm weather. The secret is to start with good gin, good tonic, and then have fun with it. Once your cocktail has an excellent foundation you can layer things on top.
If you use Flight 69, it is such a clean base that you can add anything you like to it after that. Let your imagination guide you, but so far adding St. George Raspberry has been the most fun for me.
If you use something more intense like Uncle Val’s or the Botanist you can try to tame it or make it even crazier by adding elderflower, cucumber, and mint!
Keith’s latest
3 oz of EDINBURGH GIN
6 oz of FEVER TREE ELDERFLOWER TONIC
Garnish with Lime
