Southern Spirits Has Everything You Need for Memorial Day Weekend!
Hey there boozefans, it is Memorial Day weekend and that means pandemonium in this business. We will be packed to the gills this weekend with bottles flying out the door and fireworks being sold like crazy next door. We are ready to help you plan the best block parties, home parties, or crying alone in your house with the lights off type situations. I try not to judge, so if you are sacrificing ducks to the god of light, or trying to forget your own name, I can help with all of that and more.
People are constantly insisting on buying the most famous brands in general, but for some reason they REALLY want those famous brands when they are having a party or a wedding etc. This confounds me for several reasons, but the biggest of which is why wouldn’t you want your guests to drink better booze? (for less money!) The second reason is, to be a good host, part of the fun is turning people on to new things. I used to attend a Halloween party in California that had the best lineup you can imagine, and while it was very impressive to think about that aspect, for me the best part was a bunch of people getting to experience wine we had never had before chosen with great care by our consummate host, Bruce. On a much smaller scale but no less significant were the New Years Party’s hosted by David Tom (aka Colonel Sharky) A small gathering that always featured something lovely and unexpected, like a vertical of Burrel School Cabernet Franc! These were events that would be foolish to miss, and while the first would have cost a small fortune the second was not very expensive. A little imagination and adventure can go a long way.

TASTINGS: FRIDAY WINE 4:00-6:00
Four different wines chosen by your Wine Buyer Martha.
SCHOEFENHOFFER GRAPEFRUIT BEER 4:00-6:00
SATURDAY FREE HOT DOGS FROM 12:00-5:00
Donations go to Veterans.
SATURDAY AFRICAN STARR RUM 2:00-5:00
This rum was a big hit the last time they were here. It is rare to find a sipping white rum, but that was these guys have made. It also works in cocktails to be sure.
KEITH’S CABINET: What Keith is drinking now.
LEXINGTON BREWING: OLD FASHIONED ALE-I found this beer to be quite tasty on its own but it was amazing when paired with roasted Pecans!
CROSSBARN PINOT NOIR: This Pinot Noir is perfect for the Summer time. It is not too big but still has plenty of fruit to go around. As usual, when you see Paul Hobbs on a bottle, it is a good sign of quality.
DON FELIX ANEJO: I really enjoyed this tequila. While still quite smooth it has a dryness and spiciness that has largely been abandoned by this industry. So many tequila’s now favor the sweet, vanilla taste.
NEW ARRIVALS:
CROWN HONEY: After the smashing success of Crown Maple, the fine folks at Crown thought “maybe Americans prefer honey? I am not sure because I have been in a coma for four years!”
SMIRNOFF RED, WHITE, AND BERRY: Remember those red, white, and blue popsicles from when you were a kid? I used to love the sound of the ice cream truck even though I was rarely given any money to use on it. Do they still have ice cream trucks?
SIGNATORY EDRADOUR: Our Signatory scotches have been flying off the shelf, and deservedly so! This was the one that got left off the shipment, but now it is here! Edradour is one of favorite distilleries and I have never had anything from them that I didn’t love.
TULLAMORE DEW PHOENIX: A limited edition release from a classic Irish distillery. This is aged in sherry casks and was requested by a customer.
MESCALERO 15: Another in the long and awesome series of single vineyard mescal.
LUCID ABSINTHE: The return of the popular absinthe in a brand new label. Kitty cat has been replaced with a shield.
SMOOTH AMBLER SINGLE BARREL: I am happy to report that we got another shipment of this amazing, award winning bourbon. Should be enough to last a month, but I have been wrong before! There goes a happy customer with one as we speak, I am waving but he doesn’t see me.
6/4 FORTY CREEK: Get a chance to try it and their reserve!
6/11 MUDDY RIVER: We love their rums so much they are welcome here anytime. Once you try it you cannot deny it!
6/18 SIGNATORY!! FOUR AWESOME SCOTCHES FROM MY FAVORITE DISTILLERY!
6/25 WOODFORD! Oh yes! Three of the best domestic whiskeys. This will give you a chance to try their still new and wonderful rye!
7/2 DIXIE: Our number one selling vodka!
RECIPE OF THE WEEK: CLASSIC DAIQUIRI
There have been so many gross variations of this drink that the original has suffered unfairly. Time to bring it back! If it was good enough for Ernest Hemingway it is good enough for me!
1.5 ounces of light rum (Denizens, Plantation, or the king of them all the Cana Brava)
1 oz Lime Juice (freshly squeezed if you like but the Nelly’s works great)
1 teaspoon of simple syrup or agave nectar.
Shake in an ice filled shaker then strain into a chilled glass. Garnish with Lime if you want tartness, garnish with Orange if you want sweetness.
