Holiday Booze News from The Best Liquor Store in the Carolinas!
It’s not exactly holiday weather outside, but our resident jolly man, Keith Haze, isn’t going to let that stop him from checking names off his naughty and nice list and helping customer’s with their lists! Here are his thoughts on the week ahead.
Hey booze fans, thank you to everyone that came to our Van Winkle lottery. You guys were incredibly patient and well behaved. If we would not have had sooooooo many no-shows then we could have finished by 7. I think the ID thing worked well so we will keep that for sure. All in all I think it was a big hit to my mind the fairest way to handle it. I know some of you spend a lot of money here and want special treatment, and hopefully my dedication and the staffs level of service justifies your choosing us. I do appreciate you and you make my job worthwhile. Everyday is now a busy one but I promise I will try my best to help everyone that walks in. As I said before the good news is that I have an awesome staff that can answer all your questions as well.
The great Hunter S Thompson serves as a model for this blog/boozeletter/weekly mailer etc. He was a master at making everything personal but also not revealing too much about himself. I find this a lot harder as I really just have this one persona. The guy that is ranting in raving in the aisles about how you should get this instead of this, does the exact same thing at his friends house even though they have asked him nicely not to. I do not work on commission I am fueled only by my desire to be the best version of me I can be and to spread the word about all the items I am excited about. When I find something awesome I cannot wait till the customers I know will like it show up, so I can share it with them. Alright enough blah blah lets get down to brass tax how much for the ape?
TASTINGS
FRIDAY 4:00-6:00 HANA GIN, MAJESTE COGNAC AND MOTU RUM
Hana Gin: Great price for a great gin. Perfect for Gin and Tonics.
MAJESTE COGNAC: This is the time of the year for Brandy and this is a pretty tasty one.
MOTU RUM: This is from Hawaii and it is a great value. A great mixer, but still smooth enough to drink solo in a pinch.
WINE 4:00-6:00
CASSAVE PROSECCO: Is Champagne too dry for you? Want tropic fruits in your bubbly? Try Italy’s favorite, Prosecco.
MACMURRAY RANCH CHARDONNAY: Need an everyday Chard that will not break the bank. Well here you go.
MORGAN TWELVE CLONES PINOT NOIR: One of my favorite wineries and one of my favorite wines. Big California fruits that will stand up to any Dinner or Lunch.
BON ANNO CABERNET: It is very difficult to find a NAPA Cabernet at this price.
SATURDAY: STARR RUM from 3:30-6:30
This rum from Africa was a big hit the last time we poured it so we decided to have another tasting! If you missed the first one here is your second chance. It comes in a beautiful package and has a lot more going on than the average white rum. Subtle and sophisticated.
KEITH’S CABINET (What Keith is drinking now)
TRIANON REPOSADO: Love it, love everything about it. There is this charred oak thing going on that just makes it exceptional!
CHARRED OAK BOURBON: Such a great deal, will be buying this till it is gone. Great mixer, but still good enough to have straight.
DOS MADERAS RUM: The perfect way to end a long day. Whether you get the 5 x 3 or the 5 x 5 you are in for a treat.
SAM SMITH OATMEAL STOUT: Feels like home. So well balanced. This is the stout I judge all other stouts against.
DE LORD 91: This stuff transports me to a happier time and place. Just two sips and I start to forget all of my past failures.
I do drink alone quite a bit. But it is okay because I just turn to the imaginary person next to me and say “Wasn’t that tasty? Don’t you love how long the finish is?”
NEW ARRIVALS
GLENFIDDICH 14: Making a brief return appearance. Grab it now before it is gone.
MAESTRO DOBEL: I was not in the market for a new tequila it being winter and all, but I was very impressed with the quality of the silver and the anejo so I brought them in. The Silver is super smooth but still has some weight to it. The anejo tastes like butterscotch! Very impressive stuff.
MACALLAN EDITION #1: This limited release had to be pre-ordered months ago. I actually forgot about it until it arrived today. As most of you know I am not a big fan of THE MACALLAN, but I am quite intrigued by this. I favor distillers blends, because I think giving them the chance to express themselves is always a good idea. Also it is 48%! What that tells me is that they were not thinking about being the smoothest as usual but actually making a powerful expression.
RECIPE OF THE WEEK:
Keith’s two step CHOCOLATE MARTINI
1.5 OUNCES OF VAN GOGH CHOCOLATE VODKA (360 DOUBLE CHOCOLATE)
1.5 OUNCES OF COPPER HORSE CHOCOLATE TRUFFLE (BAILEYS VANILLA CINNAMON)
Pour vodka first, in glass over ice. Add cream. Garnish with Mint or small candy cane.
