Spring News from Your Favorite Liquor Store
Hey booze fans, baseball has begun again and for only the third time in my entire life do I like the Cubbies chances. Once in 2004, after being four outs away from a world series the year before, and again in 2008 with Lou Piniella’s second season. Any Cubs fan reading this is probably screaming “don’t jinx us!” How can you Jinx 108 years of failure? So lets all just enjoy being the front runner for as long and as far as we can! While celebrating my best friends birthday Saturday I was struck once again about how you can be rich in life without being actually rich. Surrounded by good people, with the laughs and booze flowing freely, I did not wish for anything else. I bought a very special wine for the occasion, and that amazing thing happened, as so often does with great bottles. All of the partakers were lifted by the awesomeness of the bottle, and the spirit in which it was being shared. No matter how many times I experience that, it remains such a pleasant surprise. That someone bothered to make a product of very high quality, that I was lucky/smart enough to know about, and that finally I was able to share with friends who recognized how wonderful the bottle was. I will never get tired of saying that the right bottle can change your life. Like so many things, the more you put into it, the more you can get out of it. I was eating at “GOOD FOOD” a couple of weeks ago and was exclaiming to the same best friend that I just cannot comprehend not seeking out excellence. I get being lazy, I am one of the laziest people to ever live on the planet earth. I understand apathy, despair, and all of those other negative feelings that we all have to battle. If you can allow yourself to pause those for a moment and enjoy true excellence, it should help you remember why it is you got up this morning. So be good to yourself and have a little excellence while you can.
FRIDAY 4:00-6:00 WINE
LES HAUTS PLATEAUX: A rose from Provence, which makes some of the best Rose in France and therefore the world!
RUSTENBERG SAUVINGNON BLANC: They make excellent wine in South Africa, the world just keeps ignoring them. Lucky for you guys, Martha has not!
RODANO CHIANTI CLASSICO: Sometimes a place is famous for a reason. The Chianti region has earned its fame by consistently making well priced, tasty red wines for a very long time.
IMPERIAL RESERVA: Rioja is one of my favorite wine regions on the planet earth! It delivers over and over and over again. I will frequently by a Rioja without even knowing anything about it, because so many of them are awesome.
SATURDAY 3:30-6:30 FORTY CREEK
I am not a fan in general of Canadian Whiskey, I find it frequently to be too sweet and or too mild. However, Forty Creek is a wonderful exception to this rule. It is both less expensive and superior tasting to Crown Royal. So come and check out Canada’s finest!
KEITH’S CABINET: What Keith is drinking now
Edinburg Gin: Loving my Gin and Tonics from this Scottish gin.
Green Flash Pacific Gem: I love this beer so much, that I cannot stop buying it and then drinking it.
INNIS AND GUNN SCOTCH AGED: The one in the white box! I would marry this beer if it were legal in this state.
WHITE RUSSIANS: My best friend said let’s do Green Russians (that’s when you use St. George Green Chile Vodka) so that is what we did! They are still amazing.
HANGAR ONE KAFFIR LIME: Just mix this with tonic and prepare for happiness!
NEW ARRIVALS
SLAUGHTERHOUSE WHISKEY: Orin Swift now makes a whiskey! Aged in wine barrels.
MAKERS MARK MINT JULEP: Want to make a mint julep without bothering with any of those ingredients? Well here you go! One step drinking!
UNCLE VAL’S RESTORATIVE GIN: This gin is a substitute for Hendricks. Very well reviewed. This is now high on my “to drink list”
SUZE: This French Aperitif was requested by one of you guys. Here it is, and I am excited. It is going to be in the recipe of the week!
BYRRH: Another French Aperitif! Here at Southern Spirits we are on the cutting edge of cocktail trends (thanks to our clever customers). Closer to the Vermouth family than anything else.
SALERS: Another French Aperitif? This one is wine and Gentiane based. All you need is lemon and ice! Once again Southern Spirits is THE PLACE for the avant garde cocktail!
