Quality is Important at Southern Spirits!
Hey Booze fans, we are constantly being bombarded by desperate companies trying to grab our attention and guide us towards their crappy products. One of my favorites is the “ask your doctor” pitch. Don’t wait, pick up the phone right now and demand your doctor give you excelator! Side effects may include, loss of sight, loss of hearing, loss of will to live, hives, and uncontrollable urge to collect blue M&M’s! My business is not very different, we get salespeople in here every week trying to get me to buy banana flavored tequila and boysenberry gin. “This will be the next big thing!” One of the things I absolutely love about working here is owner Don Podrebarac has no interest in pushing these lousy products down peoples throats. I consider not just my job but my mission to protect you folks from these awful products. Each week we try many terrible items that we turn down. I only break this rule when one of you guys requests such a product. One man’s donut flavored schnaaps is another man’s Highland Park 18 (I guess). The best part about our policy is that you guys get it. You know that when you come in here, we are going to only put quality products in your hand, and furthermore we will make an attempt to dissuade you from some of the bad apples. The more cynical folks think we got some kind of reward from the products we redirect you to, but that is not the case. The reason is simply passion. We promote what we love, and we pride customer service before profit. We are out to prove that the two are anything but mutually exclusive. However, I do apologize for the times in which I am overbearing about it. Ask my friends, I am the same way at home. I simply cannot help it, I feel like I am Prometheus and I must share my knowledge with you. Trust me, when I miss, I feel quite badly about it. I want to know why, and I want to never do so again!
TASTINGS: FRIDAY 3/4 ST. GEORGE 3:30-6:30
The lovely Lindy is back pouring her wonderful St. George products! If you still have not experienced what a truly craft spirit tastes like, do yourself a favor and stop by. When you see the name St. George on something then you know it is a quality spirit!
All Purpose Vodka: One of the best vodka’s made in the world. You will not see a commercial or magazine ad for it, but it can compete with any of them.
Green Chile Vodka: This is both a personal and fan favorite. The best bloody mary, the best white Russian, the best Moscow mule all come from this beauty.
Botanivore Gin: Traditional in style, but exceptional in taste. This makes the best Gin and Tonic, but can also be had by itself. Also makes an amazing Greyhound!
Terroir Gin: This one is like drinking a forest, and I mean this in the best possible way. I relish the martini’s this makes. So clean, so crisp, and so very refreshing.
WINE TASTING FRIDAY 4:00-6:00
CRIOS TORRONTES: Just in time for this early spring comes this vibrant, lively, and easy drinking Torrontes. One of the best made, affordable whites out there.
ROBERT FOLEY “WHITE RHONE BLEND”: The Rhone region in France is much more famous for its red wines than white but that doesn’t mean they do not make tremendous white wines. Now to be clear this comes from California, but it just so happens that Rhone varietals grow very well in many parts of California.
ROBERT FOLEY RED: This Kitchen sink blend is a big fruit bomb, perfect for firing up the grill to celebrate the return of the sun.
D2: The only thing that is “second” about this wine is the urge to ask for a second glass! Another Bordeaux blend from Washington, from DeLille winery. 93 Points from Mr. Robert Parker. Washington remains a well kept secret. Luckily our Martha is here to let you guys in on it. Can be had now or aged for years!
KEITH’S CABINET: What Keith is drinking now
CLEOPATRA: That is right, I cannot stop drinking this beautiful nectar of the gods! So refined, so amazing. I am happy that there are people out there producing such pure beauty.
KIRK AND SWEENEY 23: What an awesome rum! This is what I call a goldilocks spirit, because it is not too sweet, too dry, too big, too light, too rough, or too mild. I cannot imagine anyone not loving this rum.
TAGLIATELLA: Is it an Amaro? Is it a Grappa? Is it from another planet? The only box this fits in is the one marked delicious.
STRONACHIE: I really love this Scotch. It is light and lean, but long and fun. I think that there are many scotches out there that use different casks to round out the flavors, and while I enjoy those, recently I have begun to really like “whisky flavored whisky”.
NEW ARRIVALS
AMERICAN BORN MOONSHINE: Fresh out of Nashville comes another Moonshine. Original, Sweet Tea, and of course Apple Pie.
RUMHAVEN: A coconut rum that is made with coconut water. The effect of this is to make it a smoother and less sweet rum than Malibu.
DALMORE KING ALEXANDER III: Much like the Glenmorangie Signet, the Balvenie Tun, or the Devils Punchbowl, this is a Distillers Blend. Made out of all the best casks that Dalmore has to offer.
WHISKEY NEWS NO BLANTONS NO BUFFALO TRACE ETC BUT!!!!!!
You guys are tired of not being able to buy Blanton’s and I am tired of not being able to sell it to you! However, there are always alternatives. We have this years Whiskey Advocate award winning bourbon. No not the John E Fitzgerlad, that is long gone and was verrrrrrry expensive! Now, I have been a fan of this long before Whiskey Advocate got a hold of it. Stop on by and I will happily show you right to it.
Spotlight of the Week: RUSH ESPRESSO
I think they make the best coffee in Charlotte. They also make great Chai, offer tasty pastries and have surprisingly tasty food options too. I have always experienced great customer service there. Even though none of the people that work there shop here! They still offer great products and service.
