PANTHERS PLAYOFF PARTY? Southern Spirits is READY!
Keith Haze, sideline coach to the stars is here with a breakdown of football, drinks and all his favorite new picks this week in our Boozeletter!
“Hey booze fans, what an amazing half by the Panthers! If they play that way on Sunday they will be in the Super Bowl. They will have to play two halves beat a very talented Cardinals team that features two extremely talented and hungry players named Palmer and Fitzgerald. For you New England fans, going into Denver and picking up a win should not be much of a challenge, Bellicheck was beating Manning before his arm was a noodle. While I am wishing the snow away, I do have to admit that whiskey just tastes so much better when it is cold outside. See also, rum and brandy! 2016 is off to such a great booze start that I am anxiously awaiting all the future goodies while enjoying the ones that are rolling in now. Of course sometimes a return to an old favorite is a beautiful thing. Nostalgia is such a powerful drug. We are so capable of surrounding ourselves with it now that it can be hard to resist. One of the joys of making cocktails is remembering just how your friends and loved ones like theirs. Yes this might all seem quite lovey dovey from such a misanthrope, but people I grab my sunshine when I can.”
TASTINGS
FRIDAY
3:30-6:30 (CANCELED DUE TO WEATHER!)
Mian makes another triumphant return on Friday. Someone else will have to save your life if you crash out there or eat pretzels too quickly.
MEUKOW COGNAC: The Brandy you should be drinking instead of Hennessy or Remy!
DOMAINE DE CANTON: An awesome ginger liqueur that improves everything it touches.
Margaritaville Coconut Tequila: Jimmy Buffet’s answer to 1800 Coconut. Fight the cold with tropical drinks!
WINE 4:00-6:00
EMMOLO SAUVINGNON BLANC: I love Rutherford Sauvingnon Blancs. Especially ones with low abv like this. Crisp and clean for the winter.
QUINTESSENCE: Syrah from where you want Syrah to be from. Hot and dry is what the grape likes and what it also loves is to be mixed with Grenache like it is here!
BLACK SLATE: Priorat is another forgotten region. The fact of the matter is that if Rioja was not so amazing this “second” fiddle would be way more famous. In the meantime enjoy Martha’s ability to find excellent affordable wines.
CHATEAU TANUNDA: Barossa is where you want your Australian Shiraz to be from. Australia destroyed its own wine industry by rushing out faster and faster, carbonically-macerated garbage and collapsed under the weight of its own awfulness. Since then it has very quietly rebounded with wines like this that existed before the insanity and survive now.
SATURDAY: 2:00-5:00 Don Q Rum
We are always trying to stop people from drinking Bacardi. We always say get Don Q instead. Well come and find out why. Also rum drinks are a great way to fight the cold. Bring the islands to your house!
We will not let the snow stop us. Your last chance to stock up on all of your game day needs.
KEITH’S CABINET: What Keith is drinking now
Mezan XO: This very tasty Jamaican rum is drinking exceptionally well on these cold winter nights.
BRECKENRIDGE BITTERS: Not quite a bitter and not quite a vermouth. We added this to three different bourbons and it was absolutely awesome! DO NOT DRINK on its own. Wow!
JAMES OLIVER: I bought this lovely bourbon from Oregon and am enjoying it quite a bit! Great price and an excellent sipper.
CLEMENT CREOLE SHRUB: Wow, am I having a fun time with this orange beauty. Never buy Grand Marnier again!
PELIGROSO SILVER: Still so smooth and delicious.
NEW ARRIVALS AND RETURNS:
BRUICHLADDICH: PORT CHARLOTTE SCOTTISH BARLEY
Hello Peat lovers, here is the latest release from Bruichladdich the “designer” distillery from Islay, where one man, Jim McEwan, makes it all. He made this one of the peatiest scotches ever but he has counterbalanced the peat with wine cask aging. Music to my ears!
BRUICHLADDICH: PORT CHARLOTTE ISLAY MALT
Another peat bomb, but this time without the wine influence to stop the flow of big magnificent Peat. If you do not love Peat do not worry, I really think that it is genetic. No need to keep forcing yourself to try and like something you hate and that others think is wonderful. Take Bruno Mars for example, listen to him all you want, I hope he retires and becomes a silent monk donating all of his money to charity.
CRAIGELACCHIE 13: The last of the “great single malts” this is a big, explosive whiskey, with its own signature taste. Despite the vanilla and fruitiness of the body it has a dry finish.
TRAILS END BOURBON: What happens if a distillery buys juice but then adds extra aging in its own barrels? In the never ending attempt to feed the need for high bourbons, here comes this one.
KILLEPITSCH: Last weeks boo boo was corrected. The bottles are sitting right next to me and are actually here. I apologize for the false hope provided last week.
RARE STUFF:
A lot of you know that I sometimes have things behind the counter. The reason I do that is that I want you guys to have first crack at them. Well right now I have some things behind the counter. So just find me and ask. I believe in first come and first serve, but I have had my fill of collectors scouring the area for bottles that they will never drink. I would rather sell them to the friendly faces that I write to each week.
SHOUT OUT: Keith notices other businesses doing it right like we do here.
My best friend and I are constantly searching for quality of all different types. When we find it we recognize it. So from now on, in reward of amazing service and quality I will recognize these hard working folks.
VA DI VIE GELATO: Park Rd Shopping Center- in a small white building in the middle of the parking lot.
Quite simply the best Gelato I have had outside of Italy. Everything is made on premise. A truly mom and pop operation, they have nine rotating flavors. They do not sell or make anything else. This stuff is worth the trip. Personally I recommend grabbing some amazing wings at Moosehead grill on Montford and then heading over for this amazing Gelato.
BITTER BOURBON
2 oz of bourbon Larceny, Belle Meade, Wathens
.5 oz of Breckenridge Bitter
Garnish with Orange or Lemon
