November Never Tasted So Good!
Keith Haze, the manager of the best liquor department in the Carolinas, brings you his weekly musings in our Boozeletter for this fine week in November!
Hey there boozefans!, the brown is tasting better every day. Whiskey season is in full flux and I am enjoying that part of it very much. The staying inside and drinking part of it anyway. I really enjoy watching the new season of Fargo, armed with my brandy or whiskey. Watching The Walking Dead while sipping on some bourbon is quite relaxing.
Alright Panthers fans, you are a Tom Brady injury away from winning the Super Bowl. How much fun would that rematch be? Beware the Titans though, this a classic trap game. A lot of people say to me “Keith how come you are so amazing at everything you do?” and I smile and say “I am actually terrible at most things, it just so happens that I am doing the thing that I am best at, you certainly would not want me performing brain surgery on you, or fixing your car! What would I have done during Prohibition? I guess I would have been the Capone’s whiskey selector until he caught me impersonating him and shot me. Moving right along…
TASTINGS
FRIDAY 3:30pm-6:30pm TEQUILA AND BOURBON!
Never too early to start Christmas shopping. Casa Noble Tequila makes a great gift anytime of the year. Then we have Four Roses Yellow (awesome mixer) and Chatanooga Reserve another great gift. Our favorite taster Mian will be back and pouring!!
CHARLOTTE WINE TASTING TODAY! 4:00pm-6:00pm ELK COVE VINEYARDS
Elk Cove is not the most famous Oregon winery but it is one of the most consistent and best bang for your bucks out there.
Pinot Blanc: One of the best grapes that no one has heard of. Want something light, but not boring? Lively without being too sharp or acidic? Food friendly or stand alone? All those boxes are checked.
Pinot Noir Willamette Valley: The most famous region for Pinot in Oregon for a good reason. Warm days and cool nights is what this grape craves.
Pinot Noir Mount Richmond: Single vineyard is always the way to go when you can. Just like vintage champagne or port, when the opportunity presents itself go for it. The reasons are many but the most important one is the fact that single vineyard wine will always be a much more focused and specific taste than a blend.
ULTIMA: This is their desert wine and is meant to be an ice wine. If you have never experience a top shelf dessert wine, or an ice wine then this will be a real treat for you and if you have then try Oregon’s version.
SATURDAY 12:00pm-3:00pm VAN GOGH AND BOURBON!
Mambo joins us again for… No one does flavored vodka better than those crazy Dutch! Lots of news and buzz about Larceny recently, come and find out what you think. Blackheart rum is better and cheaper than Captain Morgans. Save money and improve the quality. That is our motto!
SATURDAY NOVEMBER 21 3:30-6:30 HIGHLAND PARK WITH JOE ZIEGLER
Please mark your calendar for one of the best tastings ever! Four awesome scotches from one of the best distilleries in the world! Not to mention a chance to hang out with Whiskey Ambassador Joe Ziegler. These tastings are rare but always worth it!
Keith’s Cabinet/What Keith is drinking now
Vintage brandy: I am not positive that anything should taste this good. I am just sitting there on my shitty couch and suddenly I am transported to fancy dinning hall in Vienna.
ICEBERG VODKA: Continuing to enjoy this affordable and tasty vodka.
Trianon Reposado: I love this tequila. The charred oak puts it over the top in my book.
GROULT CALVADOS: Our newest apple brandy is delightful. Smooth and delicate up front with a toasty finish on the end guaranteed to warm you up!
CHARRED OAK BOURBON: With a deal this good, how can I pass? This will be my house bourbon until further notice.
DOS MADERAS 5 + 3: I like everything about this rum. Dry up front, but ending with the fruity sherry finish. Great price point. Awesome winter drink.
NEW ARRIVALS AND RETURNS
GLENLIVET FOUNDERS RESERVE: This is a sort of a reissue. The first batch was a very limited super high end one, but this is a bigger run, using the same concept but younger whiskey. I have not tried this but it is getting good reviews, and I am glad to see Glenlivet experimenting with smaller batch stuff.
GLENDRONACH TAWNY 15!!!!!: It is back baby, but for how long? Sold a case yesterday so do not delay, this stuff is flat out magnificent. If you tried it at the tasting you are already starting your car and heading down here.
MICHTERS TOASTED BARREL: I enjoyed this last year quite a bit. Full bodied and very aggressive, it is the kind of whiskey I want when I am ready to be engaged instead of relax.
WHISTLE PIG OLD WORLD!: With my apologies to the Boss Hog, I think this is the best thing that Whistle Pig makes. It is our Beer buyer Summer’s favorite, and I am very fond of it as well. This Rye was aged in Port, Madeira, and Sauternes! And man does that combination work. I am not a fan of cult brands or gimmicks but this stuff is the real deal.
EZRA BROOKS SINGLE BARREL: We have a little more than last time, so maybe it will make it till Saturday?
