What’s Up in Liquor News?
From Liquor Manager, Keith Haze!
Hey booze fans, welcome to April! The sun is back on and there is gin in my glass. I hope you guys are enjoying the start of Spring! Do not put those whiskey glasses away yet though because we got in some fantastic stuff this week. (you say that every week Keith) ((well that is because it is true)) (is this stuff really more awesome than last weeks?) ((gun to my head? Yes!))(you cannot have a conversation with yourself in parentheticals, and there is no such thing as a double parenthetical!)((Fine!))
TASTINGS: FRIDAY 4/3 PARTIDA! 3:30-6:30
The lovely Kelley is returning with her awesome tequila. What will she make this time? I am super excited, I love Partida, and she always does a fantastic job expanding and exploring this underrated liquids potential! Short version of my usual tequila speech. Forget about your past tequila experiences and replace them with a high end one.
NEW ARRIVALS AND EXCITING RETURNS!!!!
MAKERS MARK CASK STRENGTH: I have been reading about this one for a long time and now it is here!!! 111.3 proof, in a 375ml bottle. I like the potential of this whiskey. Makers Mark is so even that I feel it could stand to be cask strength. Very exciting move by a first class distillery.
WESTLAND AMERICAN SINGLE MALT: That is right an American Single Malt! No corn to be found in this whiskey. A blend of five barleys, non chill filtered, no added coloring! It took my persistent efforts (nagging) to bring this into the state and the store and now it is here. For now it is in the “bourbon” section, but more and more U.S. distilleries are making their own style of whiskeys, which I think is a great thing. Super excited to try this one!
IW HARPER: Bourbon’s renaissance continues! This bourbon shortage has its upsides, with these old recipe’s being brought back into the market. So for every missing bourbon another one is popping up in its place. Welcome back IW!
WILLET: Managed to snag a couple of cases of 750ml, and 1.75. Will not last, and no clue when they will be back.
WILLET RYE!!!!: JUST ONE CASE OF THE 2 YEAR OLD RYE. STARTING MY STOP WATCH NOW ON HOW LONG IT LASTS.
LAPHROAIG SIGNATORY: Did not expect to get anymore of this am super happy I did. If you have not had it, this is Laphroaig’s answer to Lagavulin. A 16 year old, sherry cask, and vintage whisky that is a peat lovers dream!
LAPHROAIG TRIPLE WOOD: Great day for peat drinkers!
EDRADOUR SIGNATORY: This was another happy surprise! If you missed this the first time, do not make the same mistake twice! If you do not know this distillery yet, then I apologize because I have failed you and you should verbally chastise me for my shortcomings as a booze guide.
EDRADOUR CALEDONIA: One of my favorite whisky’s on the planet from one of my favorite distilleries. This another grab your stop watch one!
EDRADOUR BAROLO: Just in the nick of time, sold my last bottle but managed to snag (rhymes with nag) another case! It is sooooooo hard not to buy another one of these for myself. ARGGGGGHHHH!
COLD RIVER VODKA: MAINERS REJOICE! We liked the blueberry and the gin, so why not add the potato! The whole staff found this to be an incredibly smooth, clean, well made vodka with a nice mouth feel. They use their own Potatoes to make it, and apparently other vodka’s are using potato flakes. If you are looking for a premium vodka I suggest giving this one a go!
GRAN CLASSICO BITTERS: Want to make the best Negroni ever? The folks at Tempus Fugit have recreated the classic Italian recipe. This baby can be used as a sweet vermouth substitute or as an angostura substitute.
VERY OLD BARTON: This is a great everyday bourbon. We have not been able to get AAA in stock, and the Old Charter 10 is gone. So this your replacement. Rare to find this outside of Kentucky because they have kept this whiskey a secret. Only available in a 1.75
KEITH’S CABINET: What Keith is drinking now.
NOLET’S GIN: Still the best!
CHATANOOGA CASK STRENGTH: Love it!
PIMM’S CUP: So refreshing!
KUROSAWA SAKE: Crisp and dry. Quite tasty!
KEENAN CABERNET FRANC: A brilliant wine from one of the best wineries in the Universe!
SAN MATIAS GRAN RESERVA: An absolutely wonderful tequila! Just as good as I remembered, or maybe even better than that. Silky smooth.
BEER NEWS: THERE IS NO KBS YET!!!!! IT IS COMING AND IT WILL BE AWESOME BUT IT IS NOT HERE YET. STAY TUNED FOR AN EMAIL NEXT WEEK.
If you are desperate for a yummy bourbon beer, drink Kentucky Bourbon ale. It is great!
RECIPE OF THE WEEK: MOSCOW MULE
I was in Asheville at the Top of the Monk and my genius bartender put a twist on a Moscow mule that was simple and wonderful.
1.5 oz of Vodka (Dixie, Russian Standard, Reyka)
4 oz of Ginger beer (fever tree, fentimans)
.5 oz of lime juice or two fresh lime wedges
.5 oz of vanilla (giffard, dekuyper, monin, torani)
